Virgil van Dijk: United’s loss is most definitely Liverpool’s gain

Klopp insists Van Dijk is worth every penny

Virgil van Dijk earned the praise of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp following his stellar performance in the 2-0 Premier League win at Crystal Palace. The Dutch defender joined the Reds in January after a two-and-a-half-year spell at Southampton, and Klopp couldn’t be happier as Virgil was the man of the match last night.
Paying a record fee for a defender – £75 million, Klopp says, seems like a bargain now that Liverpool won 2-0 against Crystal Palace.

“Virgil’s performance was really, really good,” Klopp said. “Quality costs a specific price. With cars it’s the case, and with players too. Nobody thinks about it now. He’s a player in this market who is worth it, and maybe now people think he was too cheap!”
Carragher also praised Dijk when speaking to Sky Sports, he said;
“I knew Van Dijk was a good player, but he is better than what I thought.
“We’ve always said Liverpool can’t win the Premier League because of their defence, but now they have Van Dijk, who I think is the best centre back in the Premier League. I can’t think of a defender off the top of my head that is better.

He’s the man to step into the position Vincent Kompany has had over the last four seasons as that leader and colossus. They are very similar as players – there is nothing they lack.”
It is well known Manchester City were in for Van Dijk, while Chelsea and Arsenal both asked the question of Southampton. Now it transpires United did actually throw their hat into the ring and made an enquiry for Van Dijk.

According to the Daily Mail, they wanted to know the terms of his deal last December but, as is typical of that club now, the question was asked on the day Van Dijk was undergoing his medical at Anfield. By then it was too far late. United’s loss is most definitely Liverpool’s gain.
